The Pittsburgh International Airport is completely transforming its entire facility and it is considered one of the most ambitious construction projects to hit the region. The goal of their Terminal Modernization Program is to deliver a more efficient passenger experience and enrich travel for all visitors, and you can bet that Local 2 is represented. The PIT Transformed website declares that this new experience will be enabled by an approximately 811,000 square-foot-terminal facility that will include airport operations, consolidated airline operations, as well as all passenger and public spaces, such as ticketing, baggage claim, a meet-and-greet area, security checkpoint and retail and concession options.
Part of the construction initiative is a commitment to increasing the environmental sustainability of the newly renovated airport, which is Local 2 Insulators’ expertise. The work that we do on this project will significantly reduce energy consumption and emissions. One example is that the existing piping systems are being renovated with newer, more efficient insulation. In the new construction areas, the systems being installed are state of the art and highly efficient.
Twelve Local 2 Insulators have been on site for the last few months and will remain until the project is finished, specific contributions to the Terminal Modernization Project will include:
- Insulating over a dozen mechanical rooms
- Utilizing duct wrap and board on all the facility’s duct work
- Installing insulation on miles of domestic cold and hot water piping, storm drainage with a storm overflow system and sanitary drainage
- Renovation work in the existing concourse, including numerous restaurants and 11 bathrooms
- Insulation thickness has been increased in certain areas including the baggage room and tug area
- Heat tracing on chilled water, irrigation and sanitary systems
This job will be more than just an opportunity to enhance the first impression travelers get of the city of Pittsburgh. It is a chance to showcase the quality work of our union and the immense impact that our trade can have on a project of this magnitude.
The Pittsburgh International Airport is estimated to finish construction in 2025. Please make sure to follow Local 2 on all our social media platforms for more updates and information about the amazing work our brothers and sisters are doing out there.
